Trip details
Day 1 (San Jose) Meet your guides at the airport and transfer to your quiet and lovely hotel, surrounded by acres of gardens.
Day 2 (Sarapiquí River, Rain forest/waterfall resort) We float for about two hours on the very scenic Sarapiquí River, which flows through rain forest, then continue on to Sueño Azul Resort, where we have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the swimming pool, take a hike on trails in the nature reserve surrounding the hotel, or just relax.
Day 3 (Arenal) En route to Arenal we stop for a long visit at La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where we’ll get the chance to hike to some waterfalls as well as visit a hummingbird gallery and one of the biggest butterfly farms in the world. After lunch, it’s on to Arenal.
Day 4 (Arenal) You might want to eat light this morning, since we’ll soon be zipping through the canopy on a cable! We’ll all ride the Sky Tram up a mountainside to an observation deck with great views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, then there are three options for getting down: ride the tram, walk the trail, or clip into a heavy-duty cable for a canopy tour that zig-zags its way back to the base (must be at least 8 years old). This afternoon there will be a chance to mountain bike.
Day 5 (Monteverde) We’ll catch a boat across Lake Arenal, where we’ll board our private motor coach for the winding road up to the cloud forest of Monteverde. This afternoon kids (and adults!) will love visiting the frog pond and serpentarium, exhibiting such species as the poison arrow frog, red eyed tree frog, ferdelance snake, and Jesuschristus lizard.
Day 6 (Monteverde) On this morning’s hike in the Monteverde Reserve we’ll admire the rich and diverse flora and fauna, including possibly the resplendent quetzal. After the hike we’ll have lunch in a local restaurant, and the afternoon is free to visit the town of Santa Elena or relax at the hotel.
Day 7 (Nicoya Peninsula) We come down from the mountains this morning to head over to the Pacific side of Costa Rica. We catch a ferry across the Golfo de Nicoya to our base for the next three days, a lovely beach resort at the south end of the Nicoya Peninsula. Lunch will be en route.
Day 8 (Nicoya Peninsula) ose who wish will enjoy a two-hour morning horseback ride that might lead into the jungle, across a river, through a valley, or down a beach. Spend the afternoon enjoying the adult- and kid-friendly activities and amenities of this wonderful resort.
Day 9 (Nicoya Peninsula) Do exactly what you want today, and the possibilities are many: sail, snorkel, ride, play tennis, enjoy an energy treatment at the spa, hike, or play golf. The guide will be available all day for the group
Day 10 (San Jose) After breakfast we’ll catch our flight to San Jose, where you can do some last minute shopping on Calle Central. Tonight, we’ll recount the joys of the journey at our farewell dinner at our hotel’s splendid restaurant.
Day 11 (San Jose) Say adios over breakfast, and transfer to Juan Santamaria International Airport for flights back home.
