Canyonlands Multi-Sport Sample Itinerary

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and always flexible schedule. Every trip is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like.

Day 1

You meet your guides at the Gonzo at 1 pm, as the first day’s activities take you to either Fisher Towers, or Top of the World for an exhilarating hike. Fisher Towers, which stand 900 feet tall, are a popular destination for serious rock climbers, a favorite spot for that “perfect” photograph, and noted for being the habitat for endangered plants such as the Dolores skeleton plant and Schultz stick plant. Top of the World, on Waring Mesa, is a cliff-edge viewpoint above Fisher Valley, Onion Creek, and the La Sal Mountains. It is formed of Entrada sandstone, and is popular with off-road enthusiasts. We return to the Moab in time for a sumptuous dinner, and an evening to relax by the pool and hot tub or to explore ever-changing Moab.

Day 2

We begin the day with an easy-to-moderate mountain biking adventure followed by a relaxing afternoon of rafting a Class II section of the Colorado. The shuttle ride into Castle Valley is a unique alpine region of Southeastern Utah. It then returns to the picturesque valley for an easy downhill ride. Sprawling views, brilliant blue skies, over twenty creek crossings, and enormous sandcastle rock features are just the first half of this one-day adventure. After a delicious lunch, the adventure heads for the river. Choose to raft or ride in an inflatable kayak for an up-close and personal river experience - an inflatable kayak offers an exciting ride on this otherwise mellow section of river. Spend the evening over dinner in one of Moab’s many lively restaurants that offer a taste of ethic cuisine, and follow it with a stroll in town or a visit to one of the area’s numerous art galleries.

Day 3

Following breakfast we travel in vans to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands and to Arches National Park. Depending on the make-up of our group, we have many opportunities for short hikes to arches and other various fascinating formations. There are many opportunities to locate reminders of past civilizations in the form of pictographs and petroglyphs, as well as lithic scatters and pottery shards. But remember to leave these things in place, taking nothing but good memories and photographs, leaving nothing but footprints.

Day 4

After a continental breakfast at the Gonzo we have the unique opportunity of canyoneering in the Fiery Furnace area of Arches National Park. This is not an area of arches but an intricate maze of eroded red and cream-colored sandstone ridges separated by narrow gullies. We will hike, scramble and rappel throughout this intricate labyrinth of canyons. Undoubtedly you will gain an appreciation for the sights and science of this off-the beaten-path adventure.

Day 5

The final day of our multi-sport adventure takes us on a thrilling whitewater rafting experience to Westwater Canyon. Depending on the time of year we will enjoy Class III to IV rapids in this first stretch of whitewater on the Colorado River. As we travel through the oldest exposed rock in eastern Utah, 1.75 million year old pre-Cambrian metamorphosed granite, we raft such rapids as Wild Horse, Little Dolores, Funnel Falls and Sock-It-To-Me, to name but a few. A deli-style lunch is served along the way, and we return to Moab by late afternoon.
