Grevy's Zebras on Community Lands

Grevy's zebras have dramatically declined in number and range over the last century. Kenya's Samburu region provides one of the species' last strongholds for the remaining 2000 Grevy's zebras, but 90 percent of the land falls outside protected areas. Dr. Paul Muoria (African Wildlife Foundation) and Dr. Nick Oguge (Earthwatch Institute) are exploring how an unprotected Grevy's zebra population uses habitat and water resources on Samburu community lands. Researchers are gathering information to help local communities and conservation organizations reduce competition between wildlife habitat needs and human land-use practices. more

Trip details

From 4x4 vehicles, you count males, females, and young Grevy's zebras on community lands to monitor population size, structure, and distribution. During the surveys, you will also photograph individual zebras to contribute to a photographic database identifying and monitoring the life histories of individual animals. Recording GPS locations, activities, and other details of livestock, people, and wildlife you observe will complete your surveys. You'll also keep an eye out for any predators, such as cheetahs or lions, to help determine their influence on the Grevy's population, and collect data on food availability. The data you collect will help researchers produce GIS maps of the zebras' distribution in relation to a variety of influences such as predators, humans, and habitat. In turn, this information will be shared with NGOs such as African Wildlife Foundation and with the Samburu communities to improve management practices in reserves and in the unprotected community lands. Ultimately, your efforts are helping to save the remaining critically endangered Grevy's zebras. In your recreational time, you might want to hike in the Mathews Range, visit a Manyatta and enjoy the rich Samburu culture and dance, visit a local school or hospital, or simply relax in our comfortable camp.
