Grevy's Zebras at Lewa Conservancy

The Samburu-Laikipia landscape of rich savannah and acacia-grassland habitats is a stronghold for the remaining 2000 Grevy's zebras, but 90 percent of the land falls outside protected areas. Dr. Daniel Rubenstein (Princeton University) and Joseph Kirathe are gathering information on these endangered zebras inside the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, where Grevy's zebra and plains zebra populations are both growing. By observing when and how zebras use this habitat, researchers hope to determine which factors are critical in helping the Grevy's zebras survive and thrive. more

Trip details

In a spectacular landscape of rolling hills, the 267-square-kilometer Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is the first cooperatively managed, private wildlife conservancy in Kenya. Your research will build on Rubenstein's five years of work with Earthwatch teams at Lewa, investigating the ecology of Grevy's zebras and their abundant competitors, plains zebras. You will drive over the savannah, mapping locations, habitat, movements, and associations among Grevy's zebras, plains zebras, and other grazers (including elephants) as well as predators. Since the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is expanding you will be in a unique position to learn how species learn about new habitats as they expand their range. This is a largely unexplored issue and will become an important part of conservation biology as new populations of endangered species are created via reintroductions and translocations. Expect full days in the field, traveling by four wheel drive vehicle. On our daily safaris, you will also have the chance to see a wide variety of Kenyan wildlife along the way.

As an Eons member, you'll get a free, 1 year membership to Earthwatch — a $35 value — when you sign up on any expedition. And members pay $100 less on their expedition contribution — so you save $135! Just put code EONS2007 in the comment field on the signup form, or, if you call, tell the Expedition Coordinator that you found us on Eons.

Earthwatch expedition-related costs may be tax-deductible in the US as volunteer expenses. Please check with your tax adviser.
