Grey Whale Migrations - Behind the Scenes

Despite their deserved reputation as gentle giants, whales are not dainty eaters. Grey whales are voracious predators with an enormous impact on the structure of the coastal ecosystems they inhabit. You can help Dr. William Megill (University of Bath) and his team analyze reams of data collected on the Grey Whale Migrations project to improve our understanding of the ecology of these leviathans. more

Trip details

You will process digital images of whales and compare them to catalogues to identify individuals, catalogue sonar and video sequences, enter data into a database, and perhaps subject tissue samples to mechanical tests. The work of any volunteer will be greatly valued, but those with special skills in statistics, computer programming, and mechanical testing can contribute to novel tools. This special, two-day project is a rare opportunity to get your feet wet, so to speak, behind the scenes in whale research. The weekend includes a walking tour of historic Bath, but you will want to take some time before or after your team to further explore this spectacularly beautiful city on the River Avon with Roman baths, Georgian terraces, and many historical and cultural attractions.

You will stay at university accommodations on Saturday evening, including a single room with bedding and towels, shared bath facilities, and a shared kitchen with breakfast foods provided. Lunches will be provided by the project, including soups, salads, and sandwiches, as well as Saturday night’s dinner at one of Bath’s many fine restaurants.

As an Eons member, you'll get a free, 1 year membership to Earthwatch — a $35 value — when you sign up on any expedition. And members pay $100 less on their expedition contribution — so you save $135! Just put code EONS2007 in the comment field on the signup form, or, if you call, tell the Expedition Coordinator that you found us on Eons.

Earthwatch expedition-related costs may be tax-deductible in the US as volunteer expenses. Please check with your tax adviser.
