Cockatoos, Kangaroos, and Bettongs

This island continent has a well-deserved reputation for a diversity of unique animals. So you may be surprised to learn that, in contemporary times, Australia has suffered the most mammal extinctions of anywhere in the world. Since European settlement, introduced predators, agriculture, and ranching have resulted in the rapid decline of many species. However, it's not too late to turn things around for Australia's legendary biodiversity. You can help Dr. Alex Kutt, Eric Vanderduys, and Jeanette Kemp monitor native plant and animal populations on a former cattle station, now a conservation reserve owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.… more

Trip details

Brooklyn Wildlife Sanctuary is a picturesque landscape located in a recognized biodiversity hotspot, harboring 40 percent of the bird species found in Australia and 30 percent of the mammals. Your team will help Kutt, Vanderduys, and Kemp monitor biodiversity in habitats ranging from tropical rainforest to open savannah woodlands. Rotating activities with other team members, you will participate in dawn bird counts, checking mammal and reptile traps, active searching, late-night spotlighting, and other sampling methods. This is a fabulous opportunity to witness the stunning variety of Australia's wildlife, from rainforest frogs to woodland birds, and from bandicoots to kangaroos. Though the work can be challenging at times, it will be well balanced by visits to local swimming holes and evenings around the campfire.

Volunteers will stay in shared cabins or cottage-style accommodations, at the van park at Mt. Carbine. There will be beds with good mattresses, hot showers, and flush toilets. Some evening survey activities may require camping out in tents for a few nights, with more rugged conditions to include "natural" toilet facilities. A staff member will cook meals from fresh ingredients, with some help from volunteers preparing and cleaning up. When camping out, meals will be prepared communally on the site.

As an Eons member, you'll get a free, 1 year membership to Earthwatch — a $35 value — when you sign up on any expedition. And members pay $100 less on their expedition contribution — so you save $135! Just put code EONS2007 in the comment field on the signup form, or, if you call, tell the Expedition Coordinator that you found us on Eons.

Earthwatch expedition-related costs may be tax-deductible in the US as volunteer expenses. Please check with your tax adviser.
