Trip details

Working with seasoned archaeologist Ken Cannon, you will search for archaeological materials and large mammal remains at both sites. You will learn hand excavation techniques, as well as how to map, sort, label, and document the artifacts teams find at the sites. You will also assist in taking geological data and use a magnetometer to survey for artifacts under the soil by sensing variations in the local magnetic field. The sites are both located at champagne-air elevations of 1,900 meters (6,300 feet), so be prepared for warm days and chilly nights. In your recreational time, you will visit the town of Jackson, and take field trips to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park.

You will camp in your own tent at the excavation site, surrounded by one of North America's most dramatic natural settings. The site is equipped with portable toilets and solar showers, and your team will make a weekly trip to the town recreation center to use their showers and other facilities at your own expense. You will enjoy meals prepared by a highly regarded outdoor cook, and former head chef at one of Jackson's premier restaurants. Dinners can range from salmon to lasagna to pork loins, with various vegetables and salad and marvelous baked deserts.

As an Eons member, you'll get a free, 1 year membership to Earthwatch — a $35 value — when you sign up on any expedition.
