Itinerary
Day 1: Depart USA
Board your overnight Transatlantic Flight to Palermo, Sicily.
Day 2: Arrive Palermo, Sicily
Upon arrival at Palermo airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel.The balance of the day is at leisure. Tonight, enjoy a Welcome Dinner at the hotel. (D)
Day 3: Palermo
Your morning tour begins in the Old City of Palermo featuring the Palace of theNormans and its superb Palatine Chapel, the Cathedral of Palermo and the Quattro Canti - the "Four Corners," a splendid square ringed by four baroque buildings. Then, visit the famous Benedictine Abbey of Monreale. Here, admire the 12th century cathedral with its outstanding mosaics depicting highlights of the Old and New Testaments, and the Cloisters. On to Monte Pellegrino, a promontorythat overlooks Palermo’s bay. Here you may wish to visit Santa Rosalia’s sanctuary, the city’s patron saint. End your morning sightseeing in Mondello, apretty resort area with shops and a lovely beach. The afternoon is free, or you may take an optional excursion along the coast to the beautiful fishing town andsummertime resort of Cefalú. (B)
Day 4: PALERMO / SEGESTA /MARSALA/ AGRIGENTO
Journey to the west coast of Sicily, reaching the city of Segesta,founded by the Greeks, to view the famous Doric Temple built on a hilltop in the 5th century B.C. Continue along "Via del Sale" - The Salt Road - with stillactivesalt mills, to Marsala. This attractive town is best known as the source of Marsala wine, which was introduced by the English trader Woodhouse in the 18th century. Visit a winery, sample some vintage wines and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.Continue on to Agrigento. (B,L,D)
Day 5: AGRIGENTO/PIAZZA ARMERINA/TAORMINA
This morning, visit the magnificent Valley of the Temples, containing some of thegreatest Greek ruins in the world. Enjoy a guided tour here, including the Templesof Zeus, Concord, Hercules, and Castor and Pollux, plus the Tomb of Theron andthe Porta Aurea. Continue your journey across the island and stop in Piazza Armerina to view the extraordinary mosaics of the Roman Villa del Casale.End your day in Taormina. (B,D)
Day 6: MOUNT ETNA EXCURSION
Today’s tour begins with a visit to the slopes of the highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, where you can marvel at the wooded craters and the latest lava flow. The balance of the day is yours to relax or explore the beautiful surroundings of Taormina, one of Italy’s most attractive resorts. (B)
Day 7: SYRACUSE EXCURSION
Travel this morning beneath the smoldering summit of Mount Etna to Syracuse, founded by the ancient Greeks. A guided tour of this venerable city highlights the Neapolis Archaeological Park, the Greek Theatre, the Latomie (stone quarries) and the Ear of Dionysius. This evening, savor a special Sicilian dinner with wine in a favorite local restaurant in Taormina. (B,D)
Day 8: DEPART TAORMINA
Your homebound flight arrives the same day. Extra nights are available if you wish to extend your stay. (B)
