Trip details

Day 1: Arrive San José

Upon arrival at San José’s Juan Santamaria International Airport, a trip representative will greet you after you pass through immigration and customs, and drive you to the Hotel El Rodeo • Early evening welcome dinner

Day 2: Farmers’ Market / La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Early morning visit to the local Farmers’ Market • Traditional Costa Rican breakfast • Shuttle to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens and view five waterfalls that line the trail • Visit a butterfly laboratory and research facility • Late afternoon return to San José • Dinner at Hotel El Rodeo or equivalent restaurant

Day 3: San José / Turrialba

Travel the Orosi valley to the town of Turrialba and Hacienda Casa Turire, home for the next two days • Visit Escuela Eslavon, a local public school and join a third grade class for morning activities • Lunch at Turrialtico, a typical Costa Rican restaurant with a view of the Turrialba Valley • Return to the hacienda for an afternoon of horseback riding • Dinner and overnight at Casa Turire

Day 4: Pejibaye River

Drive (30 minutes) to the put-in on the Rio Pejibaye for a day of whitewater rafting • Enjoy a seven-mile run with time for swimming and tubing along the way • Picnic lunch on the riverbank • Shuttle approximately 30 minutes to visit the Viborana Serpentarium • Late afternoon return to Casa Turire for dinner

Day 5: Turrialba / Tortuguero

Journey by boat to Tortuguero National Park • View wildlife en route with a naturalist guide • Stop for a picnic lunch and then visit the village of Tortuguero, the Carribean Conservation Camp, and turtle museum • Arrive at the lodge with free time to swim, nap, or enjoy a tropical drink on the deck before dinner • In season (June-August), take a nighttime beach walk and witness the nesting rituals of Atlantic Green Sea Turtles

Day 6: Tortuguero

Early morning bird walk • After breakfast, embark on a small boat nature tour into the park to observe macaws, monkeys, toucans and more • Enjoy lunch at Tortuga Lodge • In the afternoon paddle the remote creeks of Tortuguero by kayak • Return to the lodge for dinner and Turtle Walk (in season) for anyone who has yet to see the nesting

Day 7: Tortuguero / San José / Departure/Departure

Depart on a short flight back to San José (30-minute flight in a single engine Cessna 206) • Transfer to the International Airport for afternoon flights home
