Trip details
Days 1-2 Stovepipe Wells
Meet in Las Vegas • Shuttle to Death Valley National Park • In the distance, view the Great Salt Flats, a shimmering expanse that might just trick your eyes into believing you’ve reached the ocean’s shore! • Cool off with a dip in the motel’s pool • Hike through shady Mosaic Canyon and marvel at the brilliant colors of the surrounding rock—a result of marble fragments fused to the rock walls by sediment • Catch a desert sunset while exploring nearby sand dunes • Tour Scotty’s Castle, a flamboyant Moorish-style hacienda boasting an indoor waterfall, 18 fireplaces and a pipe organ • Bike downhill from the castle and absorb the subtle desert scenery.
Days 3-5 Furnace Creek
Rise early and watch the colorful desert sunrise • Ride past jagged badlands awash in pastels • Stroll along the Salt Creek Nature Trail and perhaps spot the tracks of bobcats, coyotes and ravens • At Dante’s View, enjoy a sweeping panorama of 1,000-square miles of rugged escarpments, vast alluvial fans, sparkling white salt flats, the Panamint Mountains, Telescope Peak and the distant Sierra Nevada • Cap off the day with an exhilarating downhill spin to the desert floor—or perhaps play a round of golf instead • How low can you go? Delight in a visit to Badwater, which lies at 282 feet below sea level.
