Trip details
Day 1 & 2 Montbazon and Amboise
Transfer to the village of Montbazon whose dark origins as a fortress built by the notorious Fulk Nerra in the 10th c. belie the warmth and grace we experience at our 4 star château. After a warm-up ride through the wooded landscape, we dine on a gourmet meal featuring sesame scented langoustines roasted in truffle oil and sautéd sea-bass provençale. The next morning we strike out along country lanes through golden wheat and sunflowers that lead us past a countryside dotted with castles. The highlight is the medieval town of Amboise, a favorite of King Charles VIII.
• One night at the Château de la Tortiniere, a lovely manor house overlooking the Indre River Valley. Day 3 Chenonceaux
From regal Amboise on the Loire we pedal to the Cher River, where we visit the easily recognized Château de Chenonceau. Indisputably one of the most beautiful castles anywhere in France, it stretches on white stone piers across the river and its grounds are adorned with rose gardens and mazes. The Cher marked the limit between occupied and free France during WWII, and locals used the château's gallery to escape into free France. After our ride, relax by the pool, or in the gardens of our hotel before our gourmet dinner at our inn's acclaimed restaurant.
Day 4 Lussault-sur-Loire
Our morning ride leads us through the vineyards of the Touraine estate, or there is time to visit the quixotic 18th c. Chanteloup Pagoda. Built by the exiled Duke of Choiseul, the Pagoda is seven stories high with each story smaller than the one below. Early afternoon farewell and transfers to the train station.
• Two nights at Les Manoir les Minimes, a handsome manor house on the banks of the Loire.
