Trip details

Can Sara is a beautifully restored "Masia," or traditional stone farmhouse. Situated in northeast Spain, the villa offers spectacular views of the Pyrenees. The location is close to many historic towns and villages and is an easy drive from the splendid beaches and old fishing ports of the Costa Brava. The famous lake of Banyoles is nearby, surrounded by a vast network of paths for exploring mountains, rivers, valleys and woodlands. This is a bird watcher’s paradise! The closest village is within walking distance (1 mile), and there is a train station just five miles from the house.

The property sits in a unique location – close to the highway but secluded on two acres of wooded grounds and landscaped gardens, with fabulous mountain views and within walking distance of a village with shops, bakeries and restaurants. The house is accessed via a private road that leads to only two or three houses, ensuring a quiet, peaceful setting. The owners have restored Can Sara in keeping with the original architecture and have retained many original features such as antique floor tiles, vaulted ceilings and an original bread oven, but they have also added many creature comforts, including a sauna and a heated pool. Eighteen-inch thick walls promise coolness in summer and warmth in winter. Covered terraces and furnished patios provide idyllic spots for relaxing in the shade, sunbathing, and dining al fresco.

The front door opens into a flagstone entrance hall that leads to a lovely garden room with table, chairs and a small fountain. This room is adjacent to the bar, where you can meet for pre-dinner cocktails. Another entrance leads to two bedrooms and two bathrooms; stairs lead lead from here to the dining room, with an open balcony equipped with books, videos, and board games. The fully equipped kitchen has a working fireplace and an open-plan breakfast room as well as a dishwasher and microwave. Doors lead to a large terrace overlooking the garden and pool or into a comfortable sitting room with satellite TV. The master bedroom is also located on this floor and has an open balcony and spacious en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi tub.

On the third floor is a large covered terrace, with a beautiful old rustic dining table that seats 12 comfortably. A split-level lounge area has comfortable chairs, table and a hammock. Watch the sunset over the Pyrenees; the views are spectacular! There are three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms located on this floor.

Can Sara has a total of six double bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms. Technically, the house can sleep 12; but we feel the house is ideal for up to four couples or a family of 10-12 because the two downstairs bedrooms have low ceilings and are best suited for children.

In the garden are lounge chairs for relaxing by the pool (10x5 meters) and there is an outside dining table for dining under the stars. There is also a bocce (boules) court. Outside of the sauna is another lovely seating area. Two mountain bikes are supplied for guests’ use. An equestrian center is within walking distance of the house, and tennis courts can be found in nearby Banyoles. Golf and fishing are available nearby.

Amenities include satellite TV, stereo, washer & dryer, and window screens. An English-speaking property manager will greet you when you arrive, and can help with restaurant recommendations and reservations, as well as daytrip plans.
