VILLA D'ORO

For elegant accommodations in the quiet green countryside of northern Lazio, one can hardly do better than Villa d'Oro. Dating from the 16th century, the villa has been home to members of the present family for over three hundred years. The nearby medieval town of Viterbo, once a favored retreat of Roman popes, has a charming historic quarter. A day trip to Rome is easily managed from Villa d'Oro (and not to be missed!). Also worthwhile is an excursion to the famous Etruscan site at Tarquinia, where 6,000 ancient tombs remain, many adorned with frescoes, and an excellent museum displays… more

Trip details

Northern Lazio offers a variety of other attractions, among them a pleasant nature preserve at Lago di Vico, a paradise of Renaissance gardens at Villa Lante in Bagnaia, and a rather extraordinary "park of monsters"-the Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo. Also within day-trip range are many of the towns and villages of Southern Tuscany and Umbria: the well-known Tuscan town of Siena is just 80 km to the northwest, while St. Francis' Umbrian birthplace, Assisi, is a comparable distance to the north. Back home again, one finds the nearest shops and conveniences just 2 km away at San Martino. Orvieto is about 1/2 hour away.

To reach the elegant Villa d'Oro, one follows the private drive through its picturesque grounds, planted with olive and lemon trees and other lush vegetation. Surrounding the house is a wonderfully kept garden, and nearby on a grassy terrace is the "infinity" pool, offering a panorama of the hills of Lazio. One enters the house by a stately staircase into a spacious living room with a fireplace. Lovely antique furniture is seen here, as throughout the rest of the house.

Also on the ground floor are the well-equipped kitchen and large dining room, a TV room, a study, a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with shower, an additional W.C. and a laundry room. Guests can choose to dine out of doors on a furnished terrace or a separate pergola reached from the kitchen. Upstairs is a master bedroom suite including a sitting room and a bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. Two more double bedrooms are found on the second floor, as well as a twin bedroom and a large single bedroom (okay for two children or one adult). There are two additional bathrooms, one with shower, one with shower and tub.
