TRULLO BIANCO

Farmers built very unusual conical-shaped houses 2-3 centuries ago in the Itria Valley of Puglia. Now about 1000 or so remain and some have been renovated into modern dwellings inside, while outside they look like something out of a fairytale. A trullo is built from local stone with walls more than a meter thick to protect against elements. The outside walls are whitewashed and the fitted stone roofs are left slate-colored. Each room is round and each has its own conical roof. Here water is rare, rare, rare and one uses water sparingly. This design of a Trullo maximizes protection… more

Trip details

The location, near Martina Franca, is perfect for exploring all of Puglia and also for enjoying the splendid beaches. Both the Adriatic and the Ionian seas are easily reached. Choose which beach you wish depending upon the wind direction and clarity of the waters. Bari is 70 km, Brindisi is 40 km, the Adriatic Sea is 30 km (where you find unspoiled sandy beaches, fresh seafood restaurants on the beach, scuba diving and boating). Regional airports are found at Bari and Brindisi, where visitors can also take ships to Greece. A small grocery store is located in walking distance (800 meters away) and the lovely white hill village of Cisternino is 6 km away. The area is known also for its local country festivals, jazz festivals, wonderful produce, art, churches, castles, fortified farms, pottery, excellent gastronomy, wines and most of all, for its very open, friendly people. Weather is mild and water is scarce (which means that sun-seekers will seldom find rainy days). The land is divided by ancient stonewalls into fields of wheat, olive trees, and vineyards while oleander and poppies line the roads. The air is fresh and the atmosphere is one of ancient welcome.

Trullo Bianco has been restored over the last 5 years into a comfortable whitewashed vacation home sleeping 8 people in 4 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms (two with tub and one with shower). Twin rooms may be made up together or separately. There are also a kitchen, living room, kitchenette, dining room, laundry washing machine and drying line, dishwasher, telephone, fireplace, central heat, gate, covered parking and alarm system. The kitchen is very well equipped with coffee maker, expresso maker, stove, oven, refrigerator and attractive hand made local ceramic dishes. Here one lives outdoors much of the year and the property offers a large terrace with pergola, nice-sized swimming pool and it is surrounded on 3 sides by a wall and one side by an open field, so is very private. The garden is lovingly planted with flowers, vegetables (fresh artichokes!), herbs, geraniums, and climbing jasmine. Help yourself to flowers, vegetables and herbs while you are here.
