Trip details
The Margutta is not an apartment, but an entire narrow attached villa, about 25 feet wide and six stories tall. It is built more or less like a staircase with rooms off of it, and is therefore not recommended for anyone with walking problems or small children. It is not an elegant, luxurious townhouse, but is a great situation for one or two families traveling together who want to save money yet be in a central location. It also works well for two couples or even five or six adults, but because of the inequality of the bedrooms, we do not recommend the Margutta for three or four couples.
Once the vicarage of a neighboring convent, the Margutta house is a very special accommodation. There are no other residents in the building. It's all yours, and you will immediately have that sense as you enter the building's independent street entrance. A comfortable old stone staircase winds its way up the building. This staircase, and the small living spaces it encounters on its way upward, are what make the Margutta so unique and so exceptionally inviting.
From the entry hall, the first level up brings you to the master bedroom, with an indivisible matrimonial bed and en suite bathroom with American-style stall shower. This bedroom is air-conditioned, as are all the principal spaces in the house.
Up one level is a smaller bedroom (no a/c) with two bunk beds. This is the only bedroom without its own bathroom en suite. There is a bathroom with shower in the basement, or in the case of a family, the occupants of this bedroom can use the bath of either of the two master bedrooms.
The third floor is similar to the first, with a master bedroom (indivisible bed) and en suite bathroom. The clothes washer is also on this floor.
The next level houses the kitchen and dining room, where a handsome glass-topped table can seat six to eight guests. The kitchen is new and is complete with a microwave and dishwasher.
Finally, the top level is the heart of the house, with a gracious living room filled with light from the windows that overlook the street as well as a window overlooking the terrace. Furnishings are stylish, modern, and comfortable, with antique decorative touches. For much of the year, the living space is effectively extended onto the terrace, where you can dine or have cocktails or breakfast while gazing across neighboring rooftops, the beautiful façade of the Villa Medici, and some of the famous umbrella pines of Rome that dot the skyline of the Villa Borghese. From the terrace, there is access to the fourth bedroom, with unifiable twin beds and its own small en suite bath (sink with shower attachment only). This bedroom is less desirable and has no air conditioning, so we don't recommend using it during the summer months.
Amenities at the Margutta include a telephone, answering machine, window screens, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, and satellite TV.
