All of our Maya Escapes are designed for travelers seeking a quick getaway to an exotic destination. The Tikal and Palenque Escape combines Latin America's most spectacular Maya ruins. Begin in Guatemala exploring temples amid jungle and wildlife at Tikal National Park, float downriver to Yaxchilan and Bonampak and experience the ancient Maya city of Palenque ending in Villahermosa, Mexico. By day expert Maya naturalist guides lead tours of the ruins while each night enjoy the regions finest hotels and lodges. Upscale hotels, transfers and guided explorations are included.

Take advantage of new direct flights from Houston to Flores, Guatemala on Continental Airlines. The Tikal and Palenque Escape begins in:
Flores, Guatemala every Saturday or Wednesday
Villahermosa, Mexico every Sunday or Wednesday.

Day 1 - Arrive Flores, Guatemala

Our local representatives will meet you at Maya World International Airport (new official name of the Flores/Tikal Airport). Transfer to hotel located on the shore of Lake Peten Itza, only 5 minutes away.

Day 2 - Tikal National Park

Spend the Day in the company of an expert Maya guide exploring the magnificent achievements of these fascinating ancient people. At its height Tikal was home to over 100,000 Maya and was a cultural and political center. It becomes easy to imagine life in the city as you explore temples, plazas, multi leveled palaces, ball courts and living areas. Howler and Spider monkeys, coatamundi, are commonly seen while the elusive jaguar and ocelot are know to survive in this protected rainforest reserve. Almost 300 species of bird have been identified in Tikal including toucans, motmots and parrots. At the days end return to your Flores hotel.

Many travelers choose to add another night in Flores to further explore the rich diversity of the Peten region. Additional nights cost $75 per night including breakfast.

Day 3 - Flores to Palenque along La Ruta Maya

Depart early for an incredible journey overland and by boat through the pristine rainforest jungles of the Peten to riverside Maya ruins of Yaxchilan and Bonampak. Cross the border into Mexico and travel north to Palenque. Overnight in Palenque.

Day 4 - Palenque

Enjoy a guided tour of the center of the ancient kingdom of Palenque. Your guides interpret the colorful history of one of the great cities of the Maya, famous for its Temple of the Inscriptions. Mid afternoon transfer to Villahermosa for overnight.

Day 5 - Depart

Early morning hotel shuttle to Villahermosa Airport (VSA) for your departing flight.

US$30 departure tax out of Flores, Guatemala or US$25 departure tax out of Villahermosa City is not included. Departure taxes may be already charged in your international air ticket, check about it with your travel agent. Personal or travel insurance coverage is not included but STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
