Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival Day
Arrival day in Budapest - time to explore the city and its many treasures! We will meet you for an orientation tonight along with bike fitting to prepare you for tomorrow's departure from the city. Dinner included; lodging is a very charming 4 star hotel centrally located in the city. See General travel info for more about Budapest. (D)
Day 2 | Ride the Danube to Visegrad (45km)
The cycle path along the Danube starts at Batthyány Square (Batthyány tér) in the heart of the beautiful capital city, opposite the Parliament building. At Kisoroszi cross the Danube to Visegrád. The Danune Bend is one of the most beautiful part of the Danube, squeezing its way between the Börzsöny Hills in the East and the Visegrád section of the Pilis Hills in the West. Arriving in Visegrád you take a trip up to the "Castle in the Clouds"and enjoy the amazing panorama which unfolds before your eyes. Accommodation and dinner in Visegrád. (B,D)
Day 3 | Ride to Esztergom (30km)
Cross the Danube to Nagymaros. Cycle along the Danube bank toward Zebegény until Szob. Stop at Zebegény. Visit the Memorial museum of István Szönyi, where the famous painter of the Danube lived and worked. Take a short walk on Kálvária hill. Night and dinner in Esztergom. (B,D)
Day 4 | Ride to Tata (53 km)
You will need to gather your strength for this section. There are places where some hard pedalling is required, but the cycling is pleasant and the air on the hilly stretches refreshing, as you pass through forests and open woodland along minor roads with little traffic. At the end of the section you reach Tata, the town of waters, with lovely atmosphere. (B,D)
Day 5 | Ride to Pannonhalma (59 km)
we follow smaller roads across pleasant, flat countryside to Panonhalma. The millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, was settled here in 996, is a valuable World Heritage site. You will visit the church and the library and you can taste the famous wines of historical wine district. (B,D)
Day 6 | Ride to Hedervar (44km)
After breakfast you will cycle to Gyõr, the historic royal town and episcopal site, situated at the confluence of three rivers:Rába, Rábca and Danube. Visit the interesting sights of town, the cathedral , episcopal palace, and several impressive monuments and baroque houses from the 17th and 18th century. Afterward, ride on to Hedervar for night and dinner. (B,D)
Day 7 | Ride to Rojtokmuzsaj (80 km with shorter option)
From Hédervár, leaving the Szigetkoz you will cycle to Lake Fertõ through the Rábaköz , the flattened area, between the Rivers Rába, Répce and the chanel Hanság, covered by vast green spaces, pastures and farmland. There is an option to take the luggage transfer van up the road 17km to start, thereby shortening this ride day to 63km. On the road you will pass small towns and villages spread over the land. Completing the longest section of the whole tour you will arrive in Fertõd, where you can find the largest and most splendid baroque mansion of the country, the Esterházy Mansion, and then on to your castle hotel in Rojtokmuzsaj. Day 8 | Ride to Sopron (42 km)
From Fertõd a cycle road leads to Sopron partly along the Lake Fertõ. The Fertõ / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is a World Heritage Site.Lake Ferto is a shallow, salt lake. The large grasslands and colorful meadows around the lake provides home for many species of birds. On the road you will reach the Széchenyi castle in Nagycenk, visitors today may see it as the Memorial Museum presenting the multi-facated opus of the " gratest of Hungarians ". Sopron lies near the Austrian border, between Lake Fertõ and the Sopron mountain, surrounded by the Lövér pine woods and wineyards producing superb wines.The town Sopron is rich in cultural historic and historic relics with a lot of interest. Last night in Sopron, dinner included. (B,D)
Day 9 | Departure after breakfast.
Trains to Vienna (70 km) or back to Budapest possible. Extra nights in either can be arranged.
