Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival day, Sunday. The first hotel is in Gueberschwihr . You can reach this by taxi or private transfer from Colmar or Strasbourg. You will arrive at this beautiful wine village, a medieval village with half timbered houses, cobbled streets and a beautiful Romanesque church. There will be a tour introduction and bike fitting. Overnight and dinner Gueberschwihr. If time allows; warm up ride - 20k. (D)
Day 2 | After breakfast you head out on a circular route that takes you along small roads through Grand Cru vineyards. You will have splendid views of the Vosges mountains, the Plain of Alsace and the Black Forest Mountains. Pedal through wine villages such as Westhalten and Soultzmatt, set in the heart of the vines, and the town of Rouffach with its cathedral, witches tower and stork park. On return to Gueberschwihr take the opportunity to explore the village centre and its wonderful Romanesque church.Challenging Option : The “Little Switzerland” Challenge through pine forests and open countryside visiting the quaint hilltop Val du Pâtres Chapel. Overnight Gueberschwihr. Dinner not included. Distance: 35 km or 40 km (B)
Day 3 | After a morning briefing, pedal out through vineyards and fortified Alsacian villages to Riquewihr. En route you have the option of a wine tasting in Voegtlinshoffen. Then pedal through the beautiful village of Eguisheim, home to Pope Leon IX in the 11th century, then Turckheim, where a night watchman still patrols the ramparts after dusk. Riquewihr is a picture perfect jewel with its multi-colored flowers and cobblestone streets. In the evening stroll around the medieval centre of the village and admire the ancient stone and half-timbered buildings. Tonight dine at a prestigious 1* Michelin rated restaurant. Challenging Option : The “Cinq Châteaux” Challenge through the Vosges Mountains on a winding forest road passing five castles. Overnight Riquewihr with dinner at a 1* Michelin restaurant.Distance : 35 km or 40 km. (B,D)
Day 4 | A nice relaxing cycling ride to Colmar, a small town that is full of beauty, culture and history. The maze of cobbled streets gives the impression that one is walking in a bygone age. Perfect picture postcard spots such as ‘La Petite Venise’ (Little Venice) and Grunwald’s 15th century masterpiece at the Unterlinden Museum must be seen! On your way stop to visit the medieval town of Kaysersberg, home of Albert Schweitwer. The more energetic may want to walk up to the impressive castle that dominates the town.Challenging Option : The “Welch Country” Challenge takes us up into the mountains through the stunning countryside, returning through the wine town of Ribeauvillé. Overnight Riquewhir. Dinner not included. Distance: 30 km or 50 km. (B)
Day 5 | Today you cycle northwards along ‘La Route du Vin’. Pass through many exquisite, typically characteristic Alsacian wine villages such as the fortified villages of Bergheim and Dambach-la-Ville on our way. We will be overlooked by the majestic castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, perched on top of a mountain and you will learn its incredible history. Ottrott, a village famous for its red wine the “Ottrott Rouge”, is overlooked by the convent of Mont Sainte Odile. Your hotel is situated in 100 acres of woodland, with a stream and scenic pond on the edge of the old village. Challenging Option : The “Graveyard” Challenge take us up to a unique fortified 8th Century church. Overnight and dinner Ottrott. Distance: 50 km. (B,D)
Day 6 | Today is a circular route that takes in the charming medieval town of Obernai, which has to be explored, as well as many villages such as Rosheim – famous for its Romanesque church – with much history. The mix of pine forest, vineyards and rolling meadows on our route is amazing. On returning, the more energetic amongst you can explore the mysterious ‘Pagan Wall’ which surrounds the convent of Sainte Odile! Challenging Option : The “Miracle” Challenge is a tough one pedaling right up to the convent of Sainte Odile and drinking from a “medicinal spring”. You can also explore the mysterious ‘Pagan Wall’ which surrounds the convent. Overnight and dinner Ottrott. Distance: 30 km or 55 km. (B,D)
Day 7 | Departure Day; if you want, we can arrange additional stays in the beautiful city of Strasbourg, capital of Europe! (B)
