Trip details
2007 Itinerary; Adventuring Down Under
Day 1 - Meet in Mackay, in Australia’s Queensland state, and drive to Eungella National Park, a unique rainforest with many endemic species. Hike to Araluen Falls and take a refreshing dip in its pools.
Day 2 - Early morning search for the legendary but elusive platypus, then hike along the Clarke Range for stunning views out over the coast. Drive to Airlie Beach, a picturesque town on the Whitsunday Coast.
Day 3 - Board a boat and head out across the aquamarine waters of the Coral Sea for a day of incredible snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef.
Day 4 - Hike up Mount Rooper in Conway National Park with views out over the Whitsunday Island group, then head to Rockhampton, in Cattle Country.
Day 5 - Go spelunking (dry caving)—no experience needed—or explore the cave in a less challenging manner. Then, head south into the Outback to the Myella Outback Cattle Ranch, or “Station” as it’s known here.
Day 6 - Explore the ranch on horseback (beginners welcome!), then drive to the historic coastal town of 1770, where Captain Cook first landed in his discovery of Australia.
Day 7 - A day to hike and sea kayak along the coastal headlands, or simply stroll along the beach. Optional snorkeling or diving excursion to Lady Musgrave Island National Park.
Day 8 - Try your hand at surfing on 1770’s secluded beaches! Later, ferry to Fraser Island, a World Heritage Park on the edge of the oceanic continental shelf.
Day 9 - Explore Fraser Island’s unique rainforest and wildlife, freshwater lakes, mighty sand dunes, and the shipwrecks along Seventy-Five-Mile Beach. Optional marine cruises or canoe paddles to see whales, dolphins, dugong, and sea birds.
Day 10 - Ferry back to the mainland for a hike in the sub-tropical rainforests of Kondalilla National Park, whose aboriginal name translates as “rushing waters.” Continue to the quaint town of Montville.
Day 11 - Visit the Australia Zoo, a center for rescued and endangered animals, en route to Brisbane and your departure home.
