BHUTAN: The Chomolhari Trek

Witness the best Himalayan grandeur - and intriguing Buddhist culture - on this fabulous trekking in Bhutan adventure! Bhutan is a little piece of heaven on earth — a virtually untouched world where spirituality is still the way of life, where time moves at a much slower and peaceful rhythm, and nature is bestowed the respect it deserves. Its pastoral valleys are dominated by 16th-century castle-like monasteries presided over by red-robed lamas, and nomadic yak herders roam the high mountain valleys. On this trek you'll explore both aspects of this unspoiled world as you visit Bhutan's extraordinary dzongs (fortress-like citadels)… more

Trip details

Brief Itinerary: The Chomolhari Trek

Day 1 - Meet in Bangkok, Thailand.

Day 2 - Fly to Paro, Bhutan. Visit the National Museum, with its collections of spectacular thangkas (religious scroll paintings), bronze statues, Bhutan's beautiful stamps, and the Tshogshing Lhakhang (Temple of the Tree of Wisdom).

Day 3 - Warm-up hike to Taktsang Monastery (the "Tiger's Nest"), perched on a cliff 2,700 feet above the floor of the Paro Valley.

Days 4-12 - Trekking in Bhutan's thick forests of rhododendron and up beyond the treeline to an amazing alpine world of glaciers, rocks, and dazzling mountains. You may see migratory birds and herds of bharal (blue sheep), and snow leopard tracks are often spotted (but it's rare to catch sight of these elusive big cats themselves). You'll also encounter local people who live a simple lifestyle herding yaks, gathering and drying herbs, making fresh cheese and butter, and weaving beautiful textiles.

Day 13 - End trek and drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.

Day 14 - Sightseeing in Thimphu, including the Textile Museum and School of Arts and Crafts. Late afternoon drive to Paro.

Days 15-16 - Fly to Bangkok. Depart Bangkok on Day 16.
